The Blue Cave — known locally as Plava Špilja — is a natural sea cave carved into the limestone cliffs of the outer Adriatic coast, approximately 45–60 minutes by speedboat from Kotor Old Town. Unlike the famous Blue Grotto in Capri, this cave remains largely undiscovered by mass tourism.
The cave's characteristic turquoise-blue glow is created by sunlight refracting through a submerged opening in the cave floor. As light reflects off the white rock ceiling, the entire interior fills with a soft, otherworldly blue radiance — it must be experienced from the water.
By law, boats may no longer stop inside the Blue Cave or drop swimmers there, so the captain anchors at the closest permitted point just outside the entrance and guests swim into the cave when sea conditions permit. The cave is more than 6 metres deep with crystal-clear water, and the temperature is ideal from late May through September.
The best light occurs between 9:00 AM and 12:00 PM. Our captains time departures to maximise your experience.
The cave is not accessible by road — the only way to visit is by boat. Most guests combine it with Our Lady of the Rocks, Mamula Island, and Perast. All tours depart from Park Slobode, Kotor Old Town.
